New Site Cruxy.com Makes Digital Media Sales Accessible to All
Cruxy Gives Independent Musicians, Filmmakers and Podcasters Do-It Yourself Digital Retail and First Ever Distributed Marketplace Tools to Sell Their Original Content
Brooklyn, New York – August 30, 2006 – Open Network Television, LLC , a leading provider of digital content syndication products, announced today that it has beta-launched Cruxy (www.cruxy.com), a media marketplace which helps content creators monetize and distribute their original digital creations. Artists may sell a wide range of digital wares including content in Mp3, QuickTime, Windows Media, Mp4, FLAC, Jpeg and 3d Studio Mesh file formats. Beyond typical a la carte media sales systems, Cruxy empowers artists to sell their original work to anyone, anywhere.
Digital content creators of all types, including filmmakers, videobloggers, podcasters, musicians, and designers, can use Cruxy to manage their online sales and delivery without relying on layers of aggregators and distributors. Content can be sold through an Artist’s Page on Cruxy.com or through any website or blog using the innovative Distributed Marketplace widgets. The Distributed Marketplace widgets allow content publishers to turn their existing website visitors into customers without the expense of building their own content distribution and payment systems.
According to Nathan Freitas, co-creator of Cruxy, “One of the most important aspects of the user-generated content revolution is to provide artists with the tools they need, allowing them to make enough money to sustain their creativity. Cruxy provides a platform that makes the pay-per-download model accessible to media artists of all types.
Artists can register for the service in seconds, and then upload their media through a simple and accessible interface. Artists then choose the retail price they wish to charge and select standard copyright or Creative Commons licensing terms for their work. Traffic and profits can be tracked in real-time through a transparent sales-tracking interface. Cruxy takes a small service fee to cover transaction costs.
According to Tony Torn, Founder of Public Eye Films, an independent film production company, “Cruxy changes everything for short-film production. We now have a simple, reliable, and easy-to-use way to digitally distribute our content and get a return for our investors. Public Eye is selling “The Convention, a ten minute short film for $1.00 on Cruxy. The Convention was recently featured in the AOL/MovieFone Short Film Festival.
Cruxy utilizes the Amazon S3 web service to store and deliver media files to customers, providing Cruxy with nearly unlimited data storage and delivery capacity. According to Dave Barth, Product Manager for Amazon S3, “We designed Amazon S3 with creative products like Cruxy in mind. Amazon S3 is a web service that provides software developers with access to fast and reliable data storage and delivery. By using Amazon S3, product designers can focus on customer-facing features, rather than worrying about data infrastructure, latency and uptime.
Cruxy also takes advantage of PayPal Website Payments Pro system to manage all financial transactions, giving Cruxy the ability to offer their customers choice in how they pay – either with credit cards or with their PayPal accounts. According to Dickson Chu, Senior Director of Small Merchant Services and Digital Marketplaces at PayPal, “Cruxy demonstrates how PayPal Website Payments Pro can enable secure and reliable commerce for user-generated digital content.
Cruxy does not employ any digital rights management (DRM) software, giving buyers significant flexibility in how they interact with content. Instead of assuming that customers will pirate content, Cruxy encourages an environment of trust between content creators and their fans. “This is a new era, in which fans are interacting directly with the artists, and trust has become a centerpiece in their interactions, says Jonathan Oakes, Co-creator of Cruxy.
Artists wishing to take control over their digital distribution can register for Cruxy at www.cruxy.com/join.
